WCSD Middle School Bridge Teams in finals of Year-end Team Match Championship
Students from Sparks and Shaw Middle Schools and High Desert Montessori Charter School met in the finals of Reno Youth Bridge Year-end Team Championship. After a very close match High Desert Montessori Charter School emerged as the winner by only one victory point over Sparks Middle School who had a huge lead going into the last match. Shaw Middle School, the other team in the finals finished third primarily because of a misjudgement in defense in a match against Sparks Middle School.

Popularity for Team matches between the WCSD Middle Schools are challenging the School Administrators to seek more students to join Reno Youth Bridge after school activity programs so their school can be represented by the best candidates to learn and compete in this challenging game. Cassi Phillips gives the game a thumbs up as the Shaw Middle School team prepares to do battle with the other Schools in Washoe County.

Reno Youth Bridge offers Honorarium to Middle School Teachers.
Reno Youth Bridge announced new plans for teaching bridge to Washoe County Middle School students for the comming school year. Kathy Lane, President of RYB, reported the details for the new program scheduled to begin in September of this year. After RYB officers met with Washoe County School District's Deputy Superintendent last month, a joint effort has been underway to increase the participation and support by the District's Middle Schools teaching students to learn and play contract bridge in prelude to the formation of bridge teams to play in ACBL and RYB interscholastic competition. Certified teachers at each Middle School will have the opportunity to volunteer to become responsible to teach students, organize partnership teams and supervise the school's bridge program in preparation of their school team's participation in tournament play next Spring. Reno Youth Bridge has scheduled 2 seminars September 11th and September 18th to provide the volunteer teachers with the basics of the bidding and playing the game and a general lesson plan. Reno Youth Bridge has offered to provide participating certified teachers with an honorarium of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) for each of two 16 one hour per week class learning sessions along with oversight of student free time practice sessions (For more information on this program contact Bud Brewer at 775-849-4113 or Kathy Lane at 775-324-0353).
In the Spring, RYB will sponsor two major interscholastic tournaments for the students in the program. The first will take place at the Spring Sectional Tournament sponsored by the Reno Unit of the ACBL. A special Pair Event for all students of the County's Middle Schools will be held on the Saturday morning of that week's tournament.
Following the end of the Spring Semester, The Reno Youth Bridge WCSD Middle School Team Championship Tournament will give the school teams a chance to compete against each other.
Last June Reno Youth Bridge completed its second year administering a pilot program for teaching bridge to students at the five schools of Shaw, Sparks, Swope and Billinghurst Middle Schools and the High Desert Motessori Charter School. Participating students had the unusual opportunity to participate in the American Contract Bridge League's North American Bridge Championships in March of this year at the Grand Sierra Resort. Players from all over the world participated in this event including some of our more famous bridge players, Bill Gates and Fred Gittleman. Gates, an avid bridge player, is the founder of Microsoft and among the two or three richest men in the world. He visited with the students and posed with them in a group picture before their Saturday pair event as did Fred Gittleman, designer of the popular Bridge Base Online computer program. BBO allows participants from all over the world to open their computer and play the game of bridge with each other on the internet.Reno Youth Bridge is a 501.c.3 non profit Nevada Corporation established in 2008 to teach students of Reno how to play bridge.
